Fire destroys Troy Mills home; residents unhurt
Authorities said two people escaped a house fire near Troy Mills early Friday morning, but three cats died.
Crews went to 5930 Winthrope St. around 3 a.m. and found the house fully-engulfed in flames. Carl D. Starns, 71, and Mary J. Ratliff, 65, had been inside the home, but were not hurt, according to the Linn County Sheriff's Office.
Sgt. Jim Gales said the house and its contents were considered a total loss. The American Red Cross was providing assistance.
An investigation is under way to determine the official cause of the fire.
Firefighters from Troy Mills, Alburnett, Center Point, Prairieburg, Coggon and Walker assisted at the scene.
