Extended hours announced at Cedar Rapids’ blood donor centers

CEDAR RAPIDS - In recognition of World Blood Donor Day, the Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center has opened its Lindale Crossing donation center, 4828 First Ave. NE, Cedar Rapids, until 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 14.
The donation center typically is closed on Wednesdays.
Additionally, the organization has expanded hours at the Lindale Crossing and Williams Plaza donation sites as part of an effort to make it more convenient to give blood and spur more donations during the summer months.
The extended hours at Williams Plaza, 3001 Williams Blvd. SW, are as follows:
' Monday, Wednesday and Thursday - 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
' Sunday and Tuesday - Closed.
' Friday 7 to 11 a.m.
' Every Other Saturday - 7 to 11 a.m.
At the Lindale Crossing location, the hours are:
' Monday and Tuesday - 11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
' Wednesday - 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; platelet donations by appointment only.
' Thursday - Closed.
' Every Other Friday and Saturday - 7 to 11:30 a.m.
' Sunday - 6 to 9 a.m.; platelet donations by appointment only.

An identification card or Donor ID is required to donate. Potential donors must be in good health, weigh at least 110 pounds, and be at least 17 years old. Potential donors may be 16 years old and donate, but must present a signed parental consent form.

World Blood Donor Day celebrates the birthday of Karl Landsteiner, who was born June 14, 1868, in Vienna, Austria.
Landsteiner became a biologist and physician whose work helped make transfusion medicine possible. It was in 1901, Landsteiner identified the main blood groups including type A, B, AB and O.
He was also a part of a team at the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research in New York that discovered the Rh-factor in blood. These breakthroughs helped define currently used knowledge of blood types and blood type compatibility.
