Eighth Avenue bridge reopens after gas leak
Nov. 2, 2010 1:04 pm
UPDATE: The Eighth Avenue bridge in Cedar Rapids has reopened after firefighters and police officers responded to a large gas leak this morning.
Craig Hanson with the Cedar Rapids streets department said a boring company hit a six-inch gas line, causing the gas leak. Attempts to cap the leak caused traffic problems, and drivers were asked to avoid the area near the new Federal Courthouse and the downtown YMCA.
The leak was capped around 10:50 a.m.
The courthouse, YMCA and the Casey's on Eighth Avenue were evacuated as a precaution, fire officials said.
