Officials in a small eastern Iowa town are warning residents about high nitrate levels in their drinking water that could make infants seriously ill.
Police in Princeton say water sample results taken Tuesday show nitrate levels above the maximum contaminant level.
Police say infants under six months old could suffer from shortness of breath and blue coloration of the skin. The condition may be fatal if left untreated.
Residents were warned that boiling the water won't stop the problem, and could actually make the nitrates more concentrated.
The Princeton Water Supply says in a release that the water is safe for adults and children older than six months to drink. No cause for the higher nitrate levels has been identified.
