The Eastern Iowa Airport ended 2014 with a record number of travelers using the regional gateway.
A total of 1,132,991 people used the airport in 2014, up 8.9 percent from 2013 and topping the previous record of 1,060,120 travelers in 2007.
'The growth is directly related to the strength of the local economy,' said Heather Wilson, director of marketing and communication for The Eastern Iowa Airport. 'We are seeing an increase in the size of aircraft being flown from Cedar Rapids, thereby increasing the number of seats we have in the market.
'When you factor in our competitive fares and local demand, we continue to fill the planes.'
At a time when airlines are reducing their regional aircraft fleet, many airports of similar size are seeing a decrease in the number of seats available in their market. At The Eastern Iowa Airport, the airlines are increasing the size of the aircraft.
