UPDATE: Firefighters pulled an injured Chicago man from a semi-trailer truck that tipped onto its side on Interstate 380 on Thursday morning.
The semi overturned around 7:10 a.m. in the southbound lanes about one mile north of County Home Road, creating a traffic jam that stretched for four miles at times.
William Bennett, 46, of Chicago was northbound with the rig before it crashed, authorities said.
“He came through the median and tipped her over,” said Col. John Stuelke, of the Linn County Sheriff's Office. “We have no idea why, at this point.”
Bennett had to be extricated from the semi cab, but his injuries did not appear life threatening, authorities said. Stuelke said Bennett was conscious and talking before he was taken to St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids. He was wearing his seat belt when the semi crashed.
No other vehicles were involved in the crash.
Stuelke did not know what Bennett was hauling, but said the cargo was not hazardous. Firefighters examined the scene to check for leaks.
The wreckage blocked one lane of I-380 near the 30 mile marker until two tow trucks hauled away the semi tractor and trailer around 11:30 a.m.
