DURANT — One person died in a crash on Interstate 80 west of the Durant area Thursday.
Iowa State Patrol Trooper Dan Loussaert said westbound traffic was slowing down approaching a construction zone. About two miles into the construction zone, one semi rear-ended another. A passenger vehicle was also involved in the crash, Loussaert said.
Both of the semi-trailers caught fire, and one of the drivers died.
The wreck closed down westbound lanes Thursday morning and traffic slowed in the eastbound lanes as crews responded to the accident.
A detour was set up that had westbound traffic exiting and heading through Durant, over to Wilton, and then rejoining Interstate 80 via Highway 38. The road was still blocked and the detour was still in operation as of 5:30 p.m. Thursday.
