Police said a car chase through a Cedar Rapids neighborhood early Friday morning reached speeds 40 mph over the posted limit.
Officers tried to pull over a car after its driver rolled through a stop sign on N Street at 15th Avenue SW, but the driver sped away. The driver made a few quick turns and was clocked going 65 mph in a 25 mph zone in the 1300 block of M Street SW, according to the police report.
Police said the driver later turned down an alley between N Street and Fourth Street SW, got out and ran away. One officer ran after him, while another officer stayed with a passenger who had been in the speeding car. The passenger was later released.
The driver, later identified as Adam O. Dawson, 30, ran into his houseat 1216 N St. SW. As the officer got to the door, he was met by a woman who denied that anyone had just come inside. She eventually agreed to let him come inside, but the officer saw a Pit Bull in the house and decided to wait for back up, according to Sgt. Cristy Hamblin.
Officers later found Dawson hiding in the basement. No one was injured in the pursuit.
Dawson is charged with attempting to elude, reckless driving, speeding, failure to obey a traffic control device, driving while barred, no proof of insurance, operation without registration and interference with official acts. He was taken to the Linn County Jail.
