Two vehicles collided under an Interstate 380 overpass in northwest Cedar Rapids Wednesday night when one was headed the wrong way on a one-way street, police said.
According to police,Dana Gilleland, 22, was driving northeast on E Avenue NW in a green Ford Escort when she was struck by a red Jeep Liberty eastbound on F Avenue NW, driving in the wrong direction. The collision sent the Jeep airborne before it rolled onto its top, sliding several feet onto the median on First Street NW, police said.
At approximately 10:45 p.m. Wednesday, Gilleland's boyfriend, 29-year-old Joel Smith, said he received a call from her telling him she had just been in a bad wreck while headed to work at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids.
Smith, who came to the scene to aid his girlfriend, said it appeared that two occupants were in the Jeep, adding that they were driving the wrong way because they were unfamiliar with the area.
Police at the scene confirmed no one was driving under the influence of alcohol.
No one had life-threatening injuries, but one of the occupants of the Jeep was complaining of hand pain. No one was taken for emergency medical treatment.
