DNA links Iowa man to 1991 California murder

(AP) - Authorities say DNA evidence links an Iowa man to a 1991 rape and murder cold case in Northern California.

Shasta County authorities announced Tuesday that they're seeking to extradite 43-year-old Brian Eric Norton to face charges in the attack on Despina Magioudis.

District Attorney Jerry Benito made the announcement on the 19th anniversary of Magioudis' death.

The 53-year-old woman was found raped, strangled and beaten to death in a field in Redding, where she was staying briefly after visiting Mount Shasta.

Norton's DNA was collected while serving time in an Iowa prison for a 2007 rape conviction. Redding Police Chief Peter Hansen says a national database matched his DNA to fluids found on Magioudis' body.

Prosecutors say Norton could face the death penalty.
