UPDATE: Authorities said a sport utility vehicle carrying a young child wound up on its top Friday when the driver was distracted by a pet ferret.
Bobbi Jo Breitkreutz, 24, of Garner, was westbound on Highway 30 around 8:10 p.m. when she crashed just west of the 16th Avenue interchange, according to the Linn County sheriff's office. The SUV rolled onto its top on the north shoulder.
Sgt. Harvey Hall said a ferret was loose in the SUV, and it appears Breitkreutz was distracted by it.
Breitkreutz was taken by ambulance to St. Luke's Hospital with what appeared to be non-life threatening injuries, authorities said. She was not listed as a patient there Monday morning, a hospital spokeswoman said.
A 1-year-old child was secured into a car seat and was not hurt.
These two ferrets were awaiting adoption at the Cedar Valley Humane Society in 2003. (Gazette file photo)
