CEDAR RAPIDS - City Hall is getting ready to demolish some of the flood-damaged buildings at the former Quality Chef Foods site, now owned by the city, on Third Street SE in the New Bohemia district.
The NewBo City Market will lease the property from the city for $1 a year once the demolition is complete and the market reaches a fundraising target as set out in its lease with the city. The lease agreement also provides a purchase option after five years.
The former Quality Chef Foods buildings to be demolished are at 309 11th Ave. SE, 1114 Third St. SE and 1120 Third St. SE. The buildings have been cleaned of asbestos and any other hazardous material, the city reports.
The City Council will hold a public hearing on the demolition plans at its Aug. 23 meeting with bids slated to be opened on Aug. 31. The estimated cost of the demolition is $167,500, a cost to be covered by Federal Emergency Management Agency disaster-recovery funds, the city says.
