Final autopsy findings are still pending in the death of an 18-month-old girl in Hiawatha on March 28.
It has been one month since first responders went to an apartment complex at 245 Clymer Road and found Kamryn Schlitter with seizure-like symptoms. She died a week later at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.
Hiawatha Police Chief Dennis Marks said Thursday the death is considered suspicious and the investigation is progressing, but charges have not been filed. Agents with the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation are assisting with the case.
Marks said any possible charges would come after a final autopsy report is issued by the Johnson County Medical Examiner's Office.
“Nothing is going to be done until autopsy results are back and the findings are complete,” Marks said.
Dr. Stephen Scheckel, chief Johnson County medical examiner, said Schlitter's autopsy has been completed, but a final report will not be complete until a forensic pathologist has finished all the tests to examine tissue.
Final results should be known in the next two or three weeks, he said.
Schlitter was the daughter of Zyriah Schlitter and Nicole King, according to an obituary published in The Gazette. She loved music and dancing, and her favorite TV show was “Yo Gabba Gabba,” the obituary said.
