DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Gov. Chet Culver won't be getting a 10 percent pay cut as he announced shortly after he slashed state spending by 10 percent across-the-board.
Culver said earlier this month he would reduce his $130,000 annual salary to match the amount he cut state spending. At the time, the governor's staff said the pay cut would total $13,000.
But the proposed budget released Wednesday had Culver's pay cut by $7,000, or 5.4 percent.
Culver spokesman Phil Roeder said it was decided the governor's and others taking a pay cut should be handled consistently. He said a decision was made that the 10 percent reduction would not be applied to wages already paid, but apply to the balance of the fiscal year.
Culver's salary is set by law. He will collect his full pay, but write a check to the state refunding $7,000.
