CEDAR RAPIDS - Crews continue to investigate the sulfurous odor that emerged suddenly at Petsmart, 4810 First Ave. NE, in Cedar Rapids Saturday.
PetSmart Support Manager Kim Diamond, was closing up for the night with two other associates when she smelled a scent similar to rotten eggs just before 9 p.m.
The 35-year-old said she smelled the odor in the hallway by the restrooms toward the back of the building when she called 911.
Emma Pulver, battalion chief with the Cedar Rapids Fire Department, said their monitors we're showing a positive signal for carbon monoxide, and signals appeared to be strongest from the rooftop unit of the building.
Fire crews shut the gas off and set up a fan to circulate fresh air into the building, Pulver said, and after checking with surrounding stores, PetSmart appeared to be the only facility with the odor.
Although now one was injured, authorities were working with a MidAmerican Energy crew to locate the problem.
