One person was injured in a two-car wreck that spun one of the cars onto a sidewalk late Tuesday morning.
At least five emergency vehicles responded to the crash at Second Avenue and 12th Street SE around 11:35 a.m. Firefighters took off a door to one of the cars so an injured female in her 70s could be assisted out of the vehicle and taken to a local hospital.
Sgt. Tim Camp said the woman was southbound on 12th Street SE and did not yield for traffic at a stop sign. Her car was struck in the rear quarter panel by a westbound car, causing it to spin around before it stopped on a sidewalk.
“The centrifugal force threw her glasses out of the window,” Camp said.
Camp said the woman was conscious and talking at the scene, but he would not speculate on the severity of her injuries. Her name was not immediately released.
The driver of the other car, Mendel Holmes, 36, of Cedar Rapids, was not hurt. He was headed to a barber shop.
“She just came past the stop sign, darted out and I hit her,” Holmes said. “I tried to brake, but she was already there.”
Police said the woman would be cited for failing to yield.
