Council defers vote on Summit liquor license

The City Council Tuesday night delayed taking action on a liquor license renewal application from The Summit Restaurant and Bar, 10 S. Clinton St.
City Attorney Eleanor Dilkes recommended the deferral to allow time to sort out how the legal proceedings for some of Summit owner Mike Porter's other establishments affects the city's decision. Porter's downtown liquor store Sauce and bar Vito's have filed for bankruptcy.
The council in October also delayed a vote on a liquor license for Sauce for the same reason.
In both cases, Police Chief Sam Hargadine recommended denial of the license, saying he believed Porter did not meet the “good moral character” standard required by Iowa law because of his financial problems.
