A 49-year-old Coralville man faces multiple charges after authorities say he allegedly forced entry into an Iowa City apartment, choked the man who lived there, punched him and then smashed his head into a portable toilet sitting in the yard at 10:07 p.m. Saturday night.
Records indicate that Iowa City Police officers were dispatched to 908 Newton Road after receiving word of a fight in progress. Upon arrival, officers say they saw Jarvis J. Woods, of 2501 Holiday Road, fighting with a man in the front yard of the apartment.
Iowa City Police say they were told Woods was in the apartment when the man came home and was confronted by him after allegedly taking a laptop computer. Woods allegedly tried to give the laptop back to the man so that he could leave the residence, but was refused exit.
Complaints indicate that the man requested to see what was inside a bag that Woods had in his possession, and when refused exit from the apartment, a fight ensued.
Woods allegedly grabbed the man by a lanyard he had around his neck, choked him with it, punched him in the face and smashed his head into a portable toilet that was in the front yard of the apartment, Iowa City Police said.
During the altercation a woman at the residence had tried to call the police, but her cell phone, worth approximately $300, was allegedly damaged by Woods. She sustained a minor injury, Iowa City Police said.
Officers arrived while Woods and the man were fighting in the yard. Woods fought with officers, but was apprehended. One officer received a minor injury that did not appear to need medical treatment, Iowa City Police Sergeant Troy Kelsay said.
Iowa City Police records indicate that Woods allegedly stole a Play Station 3, laptop computer, iPod and other items valuing over $1,000 from the residence.
Woods was being held at the Johnson County Jail on a $41,300 cash bond Sunday morning. He faces felony charges of second-degree theft, second-degree burglary and second-degree robbery.
He also faces charges of fourth-degree criminal mischief, possession of a controlled substance, two counts of assault causing bodily injury and interference with official acts causing bodily injury.
