Coralville City Councilor Tom Gill seeks another term

Coralville City Councilor Tom Gill announced Thursday he will run for re-election this November.

Gill told The Gazette the financial state of Coralville, including the improvement of the city's Moody's rating would be among his top priorities, if re-elected.

Coralville officials recently hired a consultant to help improve the rating, after it was downgraded earlier this year over some of the city's financial practices.

"I really want to address [the rating] and we're already doing that but it's not going to be an overnight thing," he said.

The lifelong Coralville resident, who  has served on the council for five full terms and two partial terms since 1987, said he's been involved with many of the changes the city has undergone.

He noted the development of the Iowa River Landing and the Oakdale Research Park and improvements along First Avenue. He said he's also proud of  the city's flood mitigation efforts, which the city has been awarded more than  $60 million in federal and state grants since 2008 to put toward flood recovery, protection, and improvement projects.

"The Coralville Community is just beginning to benefit from all the hard decisions the Council has made in the past," Gill said in the release.  "I would like the opportunity to see all those plans through."

Gill said he also wants to be a part the city's future growth, including the continued partnership with the University of Iowa and the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.
