Contractor in fatal UI accident fined for safety issues in 2009
Jan. 25, 2011 12:10 pm
A company that employed a worker who died in an accident on the University of Iowa campus was cited for safety violations in 2009 that regulators said put employees in danger during another project near UI.
Records obtained by The Associated Press show safety inspectors alleged that Iowa Bridge and Culvert allowed working conditions that exposed employees to the possibility of falling from a barge into the Iowa River or being crushed by a crane.
Regulators cited the firm for 9 serious violations in March 2009 at a work site on Riverside Drive in Iowa City, near where employee Kevin Hammons died Monday after a beam fell on him.
Under a settlement, the firm paid a $5,400 fine and agreed to correct the violations.
