Colorado woman pleads not guilty to infant kidnapping

Feb. 26, 2014 5:10 pm
A Colorado woman accused of kidnapping her 5-day-old nephew from his Wisconsin home pleaded not guilty to one count of kidnapping Wednesday in Wisconsin federal court.
Kristen Smith, 31, will remain in federal custody in Madison, Wis., pending trial. If convicted, she faces up to life in prison.
Smith is accused of taking 5-day-old Kayden Powell from his Beloit home Feb. 6. She was contacted later that day on her cell phone and told to pull over and speak with law enforcement, which she did in West Branch. While officers noticed baby supplies in the car, Kayden wasn't in the car and Smith was taken into custody on outstanding warrants.
Kayden was found inside a plastic bin outside a West Branch gas station the following day. He was treated briefly at University Hospitals before being reunited with his parents.
Smith faces up to life in prison if convicted on the federal charge.
