LA CROSSE, Wis. - The Coe Kohawks just needed to bat .500 Sunday, if you will. They couldn't do it.
Coe fell twice to host Wisconsin-La Crosse in a NCAA Division III regional baseball tournament, 5-4 and 15-4, to see their record-breaking season end.
The Kohawks (34-14) finished with a school-record win total but needed one more to advance for the first time to the D-III World Series. They couldn't hold a late lead in the first game, gave up the go-ahead run in the ninth inning and simply couldn't shut the floodgates in Game 2.
La Crosse (33-13) scored four runs in the seventh inning of Game 1 to erase a 2-0 deficit. Coe came back to tie it with two runs in the eighth, only to have UWL gets a leadoff double and one-out RBI single to go back ahead for good.
La Crosse scored seven runs in the sixth inning of the second championship game to break a 4-4 tie.
Coe first baseman AJ Reuter (15) drives a pitch for an RBI double during their game in the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Cedar Rapids on Thursday, May 7, 2015. (Stephen Mally/The Gazette)
