Coe College is one of four institutions selected as an Iowa Campus Compact AmeriCorps College Recruiter site for 2010.
Coe received a $3,000 award from the Iowa Commission on Volunteer Service and Iowa Campus Compact to be used toward hiring a current student who has previously been awarded an AmeriCorps Education Award. The student will work 10 hours per week for 15 weeks in the fall semester to promote and increase awareness about opportunities with AmeriCorps on campus and in the surrounding community.
The Iowa Campus Compact AmeriCorps Program provides students with the opportunity to volunteer 300 or 450 hours in their local campus communities. Upon successful completion of the program, member students receive a $1,000 or $1,250 Segal AmeriCorps Education Award to be used toward tuition or eligible student loans.
For 2010, Coe has been awarded 18 300-hour slots and one 450-hour slot. Since the inception of the program in 2008, Coe has garnered over $15,000 in education awards for students. Due to the increased number of positions granted for 2010-2011, students will be receiving nearly $20,000 in education awards for service involvement.
The Office of Service-Learning and Campus Engagement has been working with Coe's Office of Financial Aid to increase the number of students participating in the AmeriCorps Education Award Program from 10 students in 2009-2010 to 20 students for 2010-2011.
The other Iowa schools chosen as sites this year are Drake University in Des Moines, Wartburg College in Waverly and Iowa Western Community College in Council Bluffs.
