CEDAR RAPIDS - Mayor Ron Corbett last week noted that City Manager Jeff Pomeranz reached his first anniversary with the city of Cedar Rapids on Sept. 20.
In turn, Pomeranz held a ceremony at Veterans Memorial Stadium last week to recognize 230 city employees - about a fifth of the city's total number of employees - who were celebrating anniversaries of five, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35 and 40 years with the city.
"Each of you has chosen a career in public service," Pomeranz told the employees. "What we celebrate today is the accumulated expertise and institutional memory of a strong work force."
Of the 230 employees, 45 were celebrating five years on the job; 59, 10 years; 49, 15 years; 31, 20 years; 25, 25 years; 15, 30 years; 1, 35 years, and five, 40 years.
The 40-year employees are Wayne Clymer, engineering; Stephen Libby, water; Steven Rosenberger and Lazaro Ruiz, streets; and Richard Stephens, police.
The list of 20-year employees included Andy Kessell, in the city's forestry department, who passed away this month.
