Child playing with lighter starts Cedar Rapids house fire
A child playing with a lighter started a Cedar Rapids house fire last night.
A family cat died in the fire, at a home near the intersection of 27th Street and Franklin Avenue NE. Everyone else made it out safely.
Firefighters say the smoke alarms did not have batteries, so a child noticed the fire and warned others to get out.
The fire caused significant damage to the second floor of the home.
