NEW HAMPTON - An off-duty Chickasaw County deputy was arrested earlier this month and charged with assault.
On Oct. 4 at approximately 11:15 p.m. the New Hampton Police Department and Deputies with the Chickasaw County Sheriff's Office responded to a call at 2 East Cleveland Street in New Hampton. After receiving information from witnesses, police arrested Jeffrey Allen Athey, 35, at the scene.
Athey was initially charged with assault causing injury, a serious misdemeanor, and transported to Bremer County Jail in Waverly, Iowa.
He was released Oct. 5 on his promise to appear.
Additional charges were filed Oct. 13 against Athey after a subsequent investigation was conducted by the New Hampton Police Department and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, including one count of assault with the intent to commit sexual abuse.
Athey has worked for the Chickasaw County Sheriff's Office for six years and has been on paid suspension since Oct 5.
His initial appearance is scheduled for Oct. 23.
