CEDAR RAPIDS – Authorities said a car was traveling 78 mph down a Cedar Rapids street before the driver crashed near Kennedy High School early Thursday morning.
An Iowa State Patrol trooper tried to pull over the car around 1:30 a.m. on 42nd Street NE near Glen Elm Drive. The driver did not immediately stop, but crashed into a yard a couple blocks later, near the corner of 42nd Street and Wenig Road NE.
Lt. Randy Jones said the male driver was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving, driving with a suspended license and traffic charges. The U.S. Marshal's Service also had previously filed paperwork for law enforcement to hold the driver in custody if arrested, but the reasons were still unclear, Jones said.
A female passenger in the car was taken by ambulance to a hospital. Jones did not know the extent of her injuries.
Names of the driver and passenger were not immediately released.
The driver told troopers he thought he was being chased because of an incident earlier in the evening at a bar, Jones said.
No other information was immediately available.
