Two people were arrested and a gun stolen 35 years ago was recovered Saturday after a police chase that began near a Cedar Rapids strip club.
Officers responded around 2:45 a.m. Saturday to Woody's, 9395 Sixth St. SW, for man who was trespassing after being warned to stay off the property. When they arrived, they noticed a man hiding something under a car.
A man who was in the car got out and ran, but another officer who was arriving caught him. Officer Amanda Greider fell as she was chasing him and hurt her left elbow, but did not need medical treatment.
Police identified the person who ran as Kendan L. Fonville, 19, of 365 16th St. SE, and the other man as Darterio R. L. Johnson, 20, of 4106 Wilson Ave. SW. Johnson allegedly hid the handgun, and police later learned it was reported stolen from Houston, Texas, on Aug. 17, 1976.
Johnson spit on Officer Nathan Baughn while he was being transferred between cars, according to the police report.
Johnson was arrested on suspicion of trafficking stolen weapons, assault on a peace officer, trespassing and interference with official acts. Fonville was charged with trespass and interference with official acts.
Both were taken to the Linn County Jail. Fonville was released Saturday, but Johnson remained in custody Monday in lieu of $10,000 cash bond.
