IOWA CITY – The sentencing for former Hawkeye football player Cedric Everson III set for Friday was continued Thursday in Johnson County District Court.
A new sentencing date wasn't set Thursday for Everson, who was found guilty of misdemeanor assault by a jury in January. His attorney filed a motion to not require his presence at the hearing and also filed the motion for continuance, and both were granted.
The misdemeanor conviction carries up to 30 days in jail.
Everson was originally charged with second-degree sexual abuse in the assault of a woman who was passed out ina room in Hillcrest Residence Hall in October 2007.
His former teammate, Abe Satterfield, was also charged in the assault and pleaded guilty last year to a lesser charge and received a suspended sentenced with on probation and only a fine and victim's restitution.
Sixth Judicial District Judge Paul Miller ruled the prosecution didn't present substantial evidence to prove second-degree sexual abuse during the trial, he lowered the charge against Everson to third-degree sexual abuse based on Satterfield's testimony against him.
