The Cedar Valley Humane Society recently assisted the Linn County Sheriff's Department by taking custody of fourteen dogs – including 7 newborn puppies, voluntarily surrendered by their owner after the Sheriff's Department became involved.
The staff and volunteers at the Cedar Valley Humane Society are currently caring for the dogs; basset hounds and mixed breeds. Six of the dogs are currently available for adoption. A volunteer foster care family is caring for a mother and her seven puppies until the puppies are old enough to be adopted into new, permanent homes.
People who are interested in adopting a dog may come to the Cedar Valley Humane Society shelter at 7411 Mt Vernon Rd SE in Cedar Rapids during our regular adoption hours (Mon, Thu, Fri 11-6, Sat 10-4, and Sun 12-4) to meet them and complete an adoption application.
“We're glad these dogs will now have a second chance at a happy life. The owner did the right thing by turning the dogs over for adoption after recognizing that he wasn't able to give them the care they needed,” said Cedar Valley Humane Society Executive Director Zach Melton.
“Taking in this many dogs in one day from one location; including young puppies needing extra care; in addition to the animals Cedar Valley Humane Society normally receives each week, places an extra strain on our resources. We're grateful for the support of the community that allows Cedar Valley Humane Society to help these dogs and other homeless and neglected animals in our community.” Melton said.
Donations to help care for these and the other animals are always needed. Donations of good quality dry food, treats, blankets, paper towels, and cleaning supplies can dropped off at Cedar Valley Humane Society at 7411 Mt Vernon Rd SE, Cedar Rapids, IA 52403. Monetary donations are also needed and can be dropped off, mailed to the above address, or made online at
