Eight thousand meals will leave Cedar Rapids soon to help feed starving kids across the globe.
Kids Against Hunger is a national organization that sends food packages to starving nations. Sunday, dozens of members of The Bridge church joined volunteers at Hotel Kirkwood to package food formulas.
The life-saving meals help nourish kids back to health once they've reached the starvation stage.
“They've provided all the vitamins and minerals needed to get the process started again so kids systems will actually be able to accept the food once again,” said The Bridge team member and Kids Against Hunger volunteer Nathan Schnell.
Rice, soy, dried vegetables and minerals make up the special formula. Organizers say this is just one of many volunteer events they plan each year.

Church members at the Bridge raised money to purchase materials for 8,000 bags of food for Kids Against Hunger and spent its normal worship time packing the bags. Each packet is equal to six meals and contains rice, soy, vegetables and nutrients. (Becky Malewitz/The Gazette)
