CEDAR RAPIDS - A Cedar Rapids man who was found with a loaded handgun in July pleaded guilty Monday in federal court.
Treshawn Smith, 19, pleaded guilty to one count of being an unlawful user of marijuana in possession of a loaded handgun.
In a plea agreement, Smith admitted he was near the 4000 block of 20th Avenue SW when Cedar Rapids police were conducting a traffic stop on July 10. The officers conducting the traffic stop saw Smith throw an object nearby. They thought it was a weapon and retrieved a loaded .38 caliber handgun.
Smith told police some unknown man had just handed it to him to look at and offered to sell it for $100. Smith admitted he was using marijuana at the time and provided a urine sample that tested positive for marijuana. Smith faces up to 10 years in federal prison and a $250,000 fine. He will also be ordered to three years of supervised release following any prison time. Smith remains in custody pending sentencing.
