CEDAR RAPIDS - Two people have been arrested after a Cedar Rapids police officer watched them attempt to break into a residence Friday morning.
Cedar Rapids public safety spokesman Greg Buelow said an officer observed a burglary in progress in the 5000 block of First Avenue NW shortly after 9:30 a.m. Friday. Two suspects fled the scene in a silver SUV, Buelow said.
Police said a chase ensued with the suspects fleeing eastbound on First Avenue. The chase ended on Cleveland Street SW when the suspects lost control of the SUV and struck a parked vehicle, police said. Both suspects fled on foot and were apprehended by police officers, Buelow said.
Sedrick Johnson, 18, was the driver and is being charged with third-degree burglary, second-degree criminal mischief, second-degree theft, felony eluding, interference with official acts and driving without insurance and a license. Devonte Robertson, 20, is charged with third-degree burglary and interference with official acts.
Police said there have been 29 burglaries reported in Cedar Rapids this week.
