Cedar Rapids officer seriously hurt responding to domestic call

CEDAR RAPIDS - A Cedar Rapids police officer remained hospitalized with serious injuries Sunday night after police say he was assaulted while responding to a domestic disturbance.

According to reports, the unidentified officer responded to a call at Soapy Waters, 800 Sixth St. SW, just after 3 p.m. Sunday and spoke with Nathan Brocks, 33, of 1015 10th St. SW. During the conversation, officials say, Brocks punched the officer, knocking him unconscious. The officer then fell to the ground and struck his head against a concrete parking barrier.

The officer was taken to Mercy Medical Center for treatment, police said.

Brocks continued to struggle with other responding officers at the scene. The officers used a Taser to control Brocks and take him into custody.

Brocks faces two counts of assault with injury on a peace officer; two counts of interference with official acts with injury, domestic abuse assault causing bodily injury, criminal mischief and theft. He was taken to the Linn County Jail. More charges are likely, police said.

Public safety spokesman Greg Buelow said the officer's name would be withheld, likely until Monday, when it's listed on the formal criminal complaint in the case.
