CEDAR RAPIDS — Trails and an overlook of the city from Mount Trashmore are set to close for the season Tuesday after seeing a record number of visitors this year.
This year, 29,448 people walked, ran or cycled to Linn County’s highest point, according to the Cedar Rapids-Linn County Solid Waste Agency, which operates the reclaimed landfill at 2250 A St. SW in Cedar Rapids.
This year also marked a record in the number of people completing the “Mount Trashmore Challenge” — reaching the top 140 times, or roughly the equivalent of scaling Mount Everest. In 2024, 98 people completed the challenge for a total of 28,279 miles walked, the agency said.
The trails and outlook are scheduled to close at 4 p.m. Tuesday. But if there are unseasonably warm days and the trails are in good enough condition this winter, Mount Trashmore may be temporarily reopened. See solidwasteagency.org/mount-trashmore or the Cedar Rapids-Linn County Solid Waste Agency page on Facebook for updates.
The trails will reopen for the 2025 season in the spring when the weather permits.
