Cedar Rapids man sentenced to 20 years on meth charges

A 28-year-old man who tried to eat meth while fleeing from police in Cedar Rapids was sentenced Wednesday to 20 years in federal prison.

Michael S. Brecht, 28, of Cedar Rapids, pleaded guilty earlier this year to conspiring to distribute more than 50 grams of pure methamphetamine following a prior felony drug conviction.

Brecht must also serve 10 years of supervised release following prison and was fined $100. He is currently in the custody of the U.S. Marshal until he is transported to a federal facility.

In a plea deal, Brecht admitted he attempted to elude police after getting meth at a residence on B St. SE in Cedar Rapids. The pursuit ensued after an officer tried to pull him over for speeding, court records show.  He admitted to throwing meth out of the window during the pursuit, including a bag with meth residue near the baseball field at Daniels Park.

Brecht's was convicted of possession of anhydrous ammonia in Johnson County following a 2001 arrest, online court records show.
