Cedar Rapids man pleads to sex abuse of 13-year-old girl 

CEDAR RAPIDS - A 19-year-old Cedar Rapids man pleaded guilty Thursday to soliciting a 13-year-old for sex last year.

Cordell J. Burress pleaded guilty to an amended charge of soliciting to engage in a sex act in Linn County District Court. During the plea hearing, Burress admitted to having sex with the 13-year-old girl April 12, 2014.

According to the criminal complaint, the girl described to investigators how Burress forced her to have sex against her will at a Cedar Rapids residence. Burress initially denied any sexual contact with the girl but later admitted to it, claiming it was consensual, according to the complaint.

Burress faces up to five years in prison and up to a $7,500 fine. He also will have to be on the sex offender registry for 10 years and will have the special sentence of parole for 10 years following any prison time.

Sentencing is set for May 8.
