CEDAR RAPIDS - Keith M. Luter, 47, faces an attempted murder charge and two gun counts after police say he shot out the passenger-side window of an acquaintance's sport utility vehicle from his own SUV early Friday.
Police Capt. Steve O'Konek said the single shot came about 5:30 a.m. in the 4500 block of Edgewood Road NE and did not hit or injure the targeted driver, who was able to get away.
'Clearly these guys knew each other,” O'Konek said.
Six to eight minutes later, the victim called police, providing a description of the suspect's car and its license plate number, he said.
At 7:59 a.m., he said, police officers spotted the suspect's SUV at 15th Street and First Avenue E. The driver led police on a short pursuit that ended when the suspect pulled into a driveway on Ozark Street NE, O'Konek said.
He said Luter, of 5901 Windy Meadow Lane NE, was arrested without incident and taken to the Linn County Jail. He was being held without bail.
Luter is being charged with attempted murder, a Class B felony punishable by up to 25 years in prison; intimidation with a dangerous weapon, a Class C felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison; carrying weapons, an aggravated misdemeanor; and numerous traffic violations.
Luter has a previous domestic abuse conviction in Linn County from 2011 and a federal conviction for firearms and drugs in 1995. His supervised release in that offense was revoked in 2009.
