IOWA CITY - A Cedar Rapids man was charged assault and burglary following an incident police say took place with his former girlfriend on June 16.
Dylan Powers, 18, is charged with domestic abuse assault with the intent to inflict serious injury and first-degree burglary, according to a police criminal complaint.
Police say shortly after midnight on June 16, Powers ripped the screen from a window near the front of the woman's Iowa City apartment, after first attempting entry at the apartment door and a rear window. Powers, who the woman said was her boyfriend until a few hours earlier, then entered the apartment uninvited and was told to leave by the woman, according to the complaint.
The woman said Powers then 'grabbed her in an attempt to choke her” and told her if she tried to call for help he would beat her and break her possessions, police said. Powers also told the woman if she called police, he'd break into her apartment again, according to the complaint.
The woman told police she was slapped, and police say she has an injury above her left eye and bruises on multiple areas of her body that are consistent with finger marks from being struck or grabbed.
