Cedar Rapids landlord wants to continue sentencing
Trish Mehaffey Dec. 8, 2009 1:52 pm
Attorney for convicted landlord Robert Miell requests a continuance of his sentencing hearing that was postponed in September after Miell decided he wanted to testify.
Alfredo Parrish, an Iowa City attorney, in an application to continue said he needed more time to prepare because he just took over Miell's case late last month. Parrish said this is an “unusual and extremely” complex case because of the number of charges and the volume of evidence.
There are about 33 banker boxes of materials to go through and Parrish just acquired the sentencing transcripts that need to be reviewed.
Parrish asks the court for a continuance of 120 days.
Miell, 55, was convicted in January of two counts of tax fraud and pleaded guilty before trial to 18 counts of mail fraud and two counts of perjury. The charges stem from fraudulently reporting more than $336,000 in storm damages on 145 properties to American Family Insurance.
