CLINTON - That was pretty much a waste of a full day of the Midwest League baseball season for the Cedar Rapids Kernels.
At least for Kernels hitters, who mustered all of one run in a double-header against the Clinton LumberKing that lasted five hours and 25 innings. Cedar Rapids droped both games, 2-1, in the 18-inning opener and 3-0 in the nightcap.
This double-header ended a little after 12:30. The Kernels hopped on their bus and headed back to Cedar Rapids, only to have to return right back on it in time for a 2 p.m. game Sunday at Ashford University Field.
Clinton is 11-5, Cedar Rapids 9-8.
The Kernels' lone run came in the seventh inning of the opener. Manuel Guzman singled with one out, went to second on a groundout and scored on a two-out base hit by Jermaine Palacios.
Clinton finally won the thing in the bottom of the 18th. Braden Bishop doubled with two outs again losing relief pitcher Zack Tillery (1-1) and scored on a James Alfonso game-winning single up the middle.
In the nightcap, Clinton pitchers Art Warren and Darrin Gillies combined on a four-hit shutout. Dereck Rodriguez (0-3) suffered the tough loss, allowing three hits and three runs in five innings.
