DAVENPORT — The Cedar Rapids Kernels ended the first half of the Midwest League season Sunday afternoon with a loss.
The Quad Cities River Bandits scored twice each in the third and fifth innings and beat the Kernels, 4-3, at Modern Woodmen Park. Cedar Rapids closed the first half with a 36-33 record, in third place in the Western Division.
Cedar Rapids hosts the MWL All-Star Game on Tuesday night at 7:05 at Veterans Memorial Stadium. The second half of the season begins Thursday night at home against Beloit.
All-Star pitcher Sam Clay (4-4) allowed four hits and two runs in 2 1/3 innings Sunday to take the loss. He threw just 50 pitches, presumably so he can throw Tuesday night.
The Kernels were limited to seven hits, two from Luis Arraez. He grounded to shortstop with the tying run on second base to end the game.
