CEDAR RAPIDS - High school seniors in Cedar Rapids and Iowa City are among 141 Presidential Scholars this year, the U.S. Department of Education said Monday.
The two students - Laurel I. Dusek of Washington High School in Cedar Rapids and Edward C. Yao of Iowa City's West High School - are being recognized for accomplishments in academics or the arts. Dusek and Yao will be recognized at a ceremony June 21 in Washington, D.C.
The Presidential Scholars program each year honors one male and one female student from each state, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico, among others. The winners receive a trip to Washington and a medallion from the White House.
Dusek and Yao are the only Iowa students being honored this year.
