CEDAR RAPIDS — Construction crews this week will transition to the next phase of the 42nd Street NE improvement project, and motorists should expect some disruptions.
Beginning Wednesday, 42nd Street NE will be closed from just west of Blue Jay Drive to just east of Pine View Drive. Work on this phase of the project is expected to last through mid-November.
The detour for the project will utilize Wenig Road, Glass Road and Edgewood Road NE, although access to homes on Lark Court NE will be maintained for the duration of the work.
The larger 42nd Street NE from Edgewood Road to Pine View Drive Improvement project includes a complete reconstruction of 42nd Street from River Ridge Drive to Wenig Road.
The roadway width will remain the same, although sidewalks will be replaced and ADA-compliant curb ramps will be added. Pedestrian safety improvements include safety refuge medians and flashing beacons at two pedestrian crossings within the project area.
Additional traffic impacts during the upcoming phase include:
- A westbound lane closure on 42nd Street along Twin Pines Golf Course to accommodate retaining wall construction.
- 42nd Street continues to be closed from just east of Twin Pines to Blue Jay Drive.
- The intersection of 42nd Street and Lexington Boulevard is open to local traffic only.
- Parking restrictions on the west side of Blue Jay Drive are to be lifted.
