CEDAR RAPIDS - Eastern Iowans know what it's like to try and recover after a devastating storm, and one Cedar Rapids group is heading south to see what it can do to help in areas hit by last week's tornadoes.
The Helping Hands Activity and Volunteer Program's emergency response team plans to take a 14-state tour to help rescue crews and drop off food, clothes and other supplies.
“We are going in with our eyes wide open,” CEO Eric Hansen said.
Images from across the Midwest and South show the overwhelming aftermath of the storms that killed at least 52 people.
“Wow. It brings back a lot of memories of what I went through,” said communications supervisor Tina Richmond, a victim of the Floods of 2008.
That's why she wants to help those suffering after a natural disaster, like she once was.
“I feel it's a way for me to give back and some of what was given to me,” Richmond said.
Hansen said he and 11 others will pass out donated items and help wherever needed. Volunteers will come equipped with professional medical bags.
“We train them in CPR, first aid and pre-medical stuff that will help out before EMTs and fire departments get on scene,” he said.
While hospitals are treating the seriously injured, Hansen said, his medically trained volunteers can help those with mild or moderate injuries.
They'll also help in temporary shelters.
“Help pass out blankets, food, things of that nature - probably at a stationary place,” Richmond said.
She said the group also aims to provide moral support to help storm victims move on.
“There is hope after the storm. There's sun after the storm, I guess you would say. There's light afterwards,” Richmond said.
