Cave Visitors Get One Last Chance to Go Inside

MAQUOKETA- Park rangers say the last weekend to go inside the caves at Maquoketa Caves State Park drew just an average crowd. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources announced the closing of caves at Maquoketa and two other locations last week. The closed signs went up on Monday.
State officials say they're concerned about a fungus disease impacting bats that hibernate in the caves on state property. Visitors could bring in the fungus on clothes and shoes and spread the disease that is deadly to bats. The cave closings will last for the foreseeable future.
The Iowa DNR did not close the caves until Monday to give visitors one final weekend to go inside.
