Car crashes into Cedar Rapids home; driver hurt
Nov. 3, 2010 6:32 am
A car veered out of control and struck a northeast Cedar Rapids home early this morning.
Police were called to the intersection of 42nd Street NE and Sherman Street NE around 12:50 a.m. today. When they arrived, they found that someone had driven a car across several hundred feet of grass, hit a large sign, narrowly missed another sign, smashed through a tall wooden fence and then slammed into the back of a home.
Officers at the scene couldn't reveal the identity of the driver, but they did say he was the only person in the vehicle. An ambulance took him away from the scene. Police say it does not appear that his injuries are life-threatening.
Ms. Luz Espinoza lives in the house at 4201 Sherman Street NE with her three children. Espinoza says they were all asleep on the other side of the house when they heard a loud crash that woke them up. Pictures inside the home were knocked off the wall, items in the kitchen were thrown all over the place and the family's refrigerator was knocked over.
As of 2 a.m. officers were still investigating the scene and hoped to have a full media release in a few hours.
