Police said an alarm failed to go off, allowing burglars to hit a southwest Cedar Rapids restaurant.
Police said the burglars broke through a glass window to get inside Ruby Tuesday, 2215 Edgewood Dr. SW, sometime between 11 p.m. Wednesday and 9 a.m. Thursday. Investigators believe the window was either shot out with a pellet gun or broken with a large object.
The burglars stole liquor, a 52-inch TV and a safe containing cash, according to a manager at the restaurant. Police estimated the loss to the business at $2,000.
The manager said the alarm was set, and they were trying to determine why it didn't sound. He said security cameras showed two or three people who appeared to be males.
“It's a shame that some people can't work for a living and have to steal,” said the manager, who asked not to be identified.
The crime delayed the restaurant opening for a couple hours Thursday.
Around 7 a.m., just a couple hours before a manager discovered the Ruby Tuesday burglary, a woman reported an attempted robbery outside an apartment building on Kenrich Drive SW, which is right next to the restaurant. Only one male suspect was involved in that incident.
Sgt. Cristy Hamblin said investigators are unsure if there is any connection.
