MOUNT VERNON - The state plans to take down a bridge north of Mount Vernon and replace it with a concrete culvert.
The Iowa Department of Transportation plans to replace the existing Highway 1 bridge roughly one mile north of Mount Vernon with a concrete box culvert, according to a news release this week.
The roadway surrounding the bridge was damaged by flooding in 2014 and a portion of the highway had to be closed during repairs.
The project is anticipated to begin this construction season, with traffic detoured using U.S. 151, Highway 13 and U.S. 30.
