CEDAR RAPIDS - Gov. Terry Branstad won't be the only one leaving state government Wednesday. Michael Bousselot, his chief of staff for nearly two years, also will be departing.
Bousselot announced Tuesday he will pursue opportunities outside of state government. He has been mentioned as a possible GOP challenger to 2nd District Democratic Rep. Dave Loebsack.
Before serving being named Branstad's chief of staff, Bousselot served as legal counsel and policy adviser, starting with the administration on the inauguration in January 2011.
Bousselot served as the third chief of staff for Branstad since he took office in 2011. He succeeded Matt Hinch, who departed in 2015.
Before joining Branstad's staff, Bousselot worked as an attorney in private practice in his hometown of Davenport. Before practicing law, Bousselot worked as a consultant in Chicago, Illinois. He earned a bachelor's degree in accounting in 2005 and a master's degree in accounting and business taxation in 2006 from The University of Iowa. In 2009, he received his law degree from Drake University Law School.
Bousselot's final day in the governor's office will be May 24. An announcement regarding his future will be made at a later date by his future employer. Michael Bousselot, 34, and his wife Holly Bousselot, reside in Ankeny.
